Monuments & Memorials in Washington DC
Washington, D.C. is a city of monuments and memorials that honor the generals, politicians, poets and statesmen who helped shape our great nation. Although the most famous monuments and memorials are on the National Mall, you will find statues and plaques on many street corners around the city. National Aquarium
The Washington, D.C. Aquarium, officially known as the National Aquarium, is home to more than 200 species including sharks, eels, gators, the dreaded invasive snakehead fish and a baby loggerhead turtle. It is a private, non-profit organization that relies on private and public support and admission revenue to operate. The National Aquarium in Washington, D.C. is the nation’s oldest aquarium serving visitors from the lower level of the Department of Commerce Building since 1931.
National Zoo
The 163-acre zoological park set amid Rock Creek Park is in the heart of Washington, D.C. Open to the public 364 days a year, it is home to 2,000 individual animals of nearly 400 different species. The zoo’s best known residents are the giant pandas, Tian Tian, Mei Xiang, and a cub, Tai Shan. The Zoo is one of Washington’s and the Smithsonian’s most popular tourist destinations. It welcomes up to two million visitors—from the local community, the country, and the rest of the world—every year, free of charge.
