Join the AES Huntington Beach Plant, just a half-mile from the conference, for a one hour site tour and overview of the Genesis program, AES’s deployment of a global technology backbone, consisting of new system functionality, tools, and reports. Genesis has improved controls, enhanced decision making capabilities, and supported operational performance improvements. AES completed the deployment of SAP across 16 of its North American plants. Business processes included financial accounting & controls, supply chain, human resources and plant maintenance.

Lessons:

1. Map existing business processes prior to deployment and understand the how
    ERP processes will impact your business (for example the actual — not "theoretical"
    workflows used to plan and schedule preventive and corrective maintenance jobs).
2. Develop vendor, material master data strategies up front and ensure sufficient
    time is invested in "scrubbing" and rationalizing.
3. Ensure asset management and maintenance strategies are defined and part of the
    implementation program. Fully comprehend the impact of key fields such as:
    equipment data, functional location hier‹archy, criticality, damage and cause codes,
    classes and characteristics as they are the foundation of the maintenance program
    and asset analytics.

As these lessons have been applied and processes integrated into the normal operational cadence, the Huntington Beach Plant focused on supporting operational performance improvements through the creation of an integrated platform to view key information supporting decision making. This platform enabled the facility to:

1. Review key metrics in a timely manner, with increased clarity and visibility
2. Leverage standard IT architecture to provide a single source of truth
3. Reduce effort to produce internal and external reports
4. Convert KPIs from lagging to leading indicators. This platform, integrating
    operational data from SAP and other plant systems will be demonstrated during
    the tour.
